What to expect at a pizza restaurant
Pizza is one of America’s most popular meals and comes in strongly regional styles: thin, foldable New York slices; deep-dish and tavern-style thin crust in Chicago; square, crispy-edged Detroit pies; coal-fired New Haven “apizza”; and Neapolitan pies baked in a wood-fired oven in about 90 seconds. Most pizzerias offer dine-in, takeout and delivery, and many sell by the slice.
What to order
- Plain cheese or margherita – the simplest way to judge crust, sauce and cheese
- A house specialty pie – usually the combination the owners are proudest of
- Garlic knots – a cheap, shareable East Coast staple
- Wings – many pizzerias double as wing spots
Good to know
- Calling the restaurant directly for delivery or pickup often costs less than ordering through a third-party app.
- Large pies are usually the best value per slice; leftovers reheat well in a dry skillet.
- Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest delivery nights – order early or expect longer waits.
